Uneven Breasts After Breast Cancer: Bras, Inserts & How to Feel Balanced Again
Finding Your Balance After Breast Cancer Surgery
Breast asymmetry is something many women live with but after breast cancer surgery it can suddenly feel much more loaded. Whether you’ve had a lumpectomy, mastectomy or reconstruction, it’s completely normal to look in the mirror and feel like your body doesn’t quite feel like yours anymore.
Treatment can be life-saving and transformative, but it doesn’t always leave breasts looking or feeling even. So many women tell us that long after the hospital appointments stop, unevenness is still something they quietly carry with them – in their clothes, in their bras, and in how confident they feel day to day.
At Evenly, we’re here for that part of the journey too.
Why Breast Cancer Surgery Often Leads to Unevenness
Every breast cancer journey is unique, and the surgeries that come with it can affect each breast in very different ways.
Lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) removes the tumour and some surrounding tissue. This can leave one breast smaller, flatter, or with dents or hollows.
Therapeutic mammoplasty reshapes the breast after tumour removal but often results in one side being smaller or more lifted.
Mastectomy removes one or both breasts. With or without reconstruction, this almost always creates visible differences between sides.
Reconstruction using implants, fat transfer, or tissue flaps aims to restore shape but differences in size, firmness, projection and position are very common.
Even when things look balanced at first, changes can still appear later. Radiation therapy can cause treated tissue to tighten, shrink or harden over time. Hormonal treatments, menopause, weight changes and ageing can also affect each breast differently, especially when only one side has been treated.
For many women, asymmetry doesn’t show up straight away. It can appear months or even years after treatment, just when you’re trying to move forward.
Are Bras Enough After Breast Cancer?
Supportive bras play a huge role in recovery. In the early stages especially, post-surgery bras are designed to protect scars, reduce pressure and keep everything feeling secure.
Many women wear:
- Pocketed bras to hold soft forms or prostheses
- Front-fastening bras to make dressing easier
- Wire-free, high-coverage styles for comfort and healing
- Specialist mastectomy or reconstruction bras made with softer fabrics and gentler seams
These bras are brilliant for comfort and support – but they aren’t designed to correct asymmetry.
When one breast is smaller, flatter, firmer or sits higher after surgery, the bra can only hold what’s there. That can lead to fabric wrinkling or gaping and bras feeling twisted or uncomfortable.
Over time, this imbalance can cause physical discomfort (like pulling, rubbing or pressure) and emotional discomfort too – constantly adjusting your bra, avoiding certain clothes, or feeling self-conscious in things you used to love.
When you’re trying to heal and move forward, not feeling balanced in your own body can quietly hold you back.
Bras for Breast Cancer Survivors
Many women continue to wear specialist bras long after treatment, and there are some wonderful brands creating thoughtful, supportive designs.
Some favourites in the breast cancer community include:
- AnaOno – known for beautifully designed bras for mastectomy, reconstruction and flat chests, created by a breast cancer thriver.
- Royce – a long-established UK brand specialising in wire-free post-surgery bras, with the option to have them add a pocket to any of their non-pocketed styles.
- Nicola Jane – offering soft, supportive bras and pocketed swimwear that many women with asymmetry love
You can explore these and our bra recommendations here.
For many women, these bras provide comfort and support – but they’re often just one part of feeling whole again.
Breast forms, partial prostheses & what that really means
You may have discovered this page by searching for something often called a breast form, partial prosthesis, or breast prosthetic — especially after a lumpectomy, mastectomy or reconstruction.
Those terms can sound very clinical, but what they really describe is simple:
something that helps restore shape and balance inside a bra.
Traditionally, these products have been provided through hospitals, prosthetics clinics, or specialist suppliers, and are often designed to be worn only inside pocketed post-surgery bras. Many women start with soft fabric or foam forms (often called ‘softies’) in the early healing stage, then move to silicone forms once their scars have settled.
Evenly was created to take that same idea of restoring balance and make it feel more human, more wearable and more part of everyday life.
Our Bra Balancers™ are, in clinical terms, what would usually be called partial silicone prostheses. But instead of being heavy, rigid or medical-looking, they are designed to be soft, flexible and invisible inside your own bras — whether that’s a post-surgery bra, a sports bra, or your favourite everyday style.
They give you the same core benefits women look for in prostheses:
- balanced weight
- natural shape
- improved comfort and posture
- better fit in clothing
…without needing specialist fittings, prescriptions or hospital appointments.
Meet Amna 💛
Amna is part of the Evenly community and took part in our photoshoot after having a lumpectomy. Like so many women, she was left with one breast noticeably smaller and shaped differently after surgery – something that affected how she felt in her clothes and in her confidence.
Seeing Amna wear Evenly, smile, move and tell her story is a powerful reminder that you are not alone in this.
If you'd like to share your asymmetry story, we would love to hear from you.
Silicone Breast Forms for Post-Mastectomy and Reconstruction
If your asymmetry is more noticeable then our Evenly Bra Balancers™ provide soft, natural-looking shape suitable for balancing either 1-2 cup sizes’ difference, or to 2-3 cup sizes’ difference.
They're soft, silicone inserts that blend invisibly into your everyday bras, giving a natural, balanced look without needing a nurse’s appointment or specialised bra (unless you want one). If you're using a Bra Balancer™ post-mastectomy on a flat chest wall, it provides a realistic B or C cup projection. The concave back allows water to flow through, making it an excellent choice as a swim form too.
For smaller differences (up to one cup size), Evenly Subtle Shapers™ gently smooth and even out the breast.
They’re ideal for:
- lumpectomy dents
- scar-related hollows
- uneven fullness after reconstruction
Soft, lightweight and designed for everyday wear – they help your bra sit the way you want it to again.

A few gentle extras that make a big difference
After breast cancer, little details can matter a lot. Things like scar sensitivity, nipple changes, or how fabric feels against your skin can make or break how comfortable you feel in a bra.
That’s why we also created a few simple add-ons that many women find really helpful:
Evenly Comfort Covers
If you’re wearing a Bra Balancer™ in a non-pocketed bra, Comfort Covers give you a soft fabric layer between your skin and the silicone. They’re especially popular if you have scar sensitivity, radiation-affected skin, or just prefer something softer against your chest.
Evenly Nipple Covers
If you’ve had a nipple removed, altered, or reconstructed, or if you’re wearing a balancer on one side and want the other side to look and feel more even, our adhesive-free Nipple Covers can help create a smooth, discreet finish under clothing.
These small pieces can make everything feel more natural, more comfortable, and more like you again.

You’re Not Alone
Breast asymmetry after cancer is incredibly common — but it’s rarely talked about. That silence can make you feel like you’re the only one quietly struggling with it, even when you’re not.
That’s why the Evenly community exists 💛
Our Facebook group, The Uneven Titty Committee™ is a warm, supportive space where women share their stories, photos, questions and wins — from lumpectomy to reconstruction, from early recovery to years down the line. It’s a place to be honest, to feel understood, and to see just how many women are walking this path alongside you.
Uneven breasts after breast cancer don’t mean something went wrong. They mean your body has been through something extraordinary and it deserves care that feels gentle, human and made for real life, not clinical rooms.
If you’re ready to explore a more comfortable, confidence-boosting way to feel balanced again, you can find our Evenly Bra Balancers™ and Subtle Shapers™ here.
You deserve to feel comfortable, confident and beautifully balanced — today and every day 💛
