The Story Behind Evenly: Why I Had to Create a Solution for Breast Asymmetry

– A note from our Founder, Kate Taylor

Ever wondered “why are there no products out there specifically for breast asymmetry?”

I did many times. After all, our boobs are sisters – not twins, right?

No two boobs are created equal, so why do so many bra manufacturers assume they are? It turns out, a lot of them have been designed by men. Yep, you read that right. Many of the big players in lingerie, like Victoria’s Secret, La Senza, and Wonderbra, were created by men.

I found that pretty shocking too. That’s when I decided it was time to step into the male-dominated lingerie design world with something that actually works; a functional and comfortable bra cup filling solution.

It All Started with Feet…(It’s not what it sounds like!)

Back in 2014, when ballet flats and stiletto pumps were all the rage, I realised something about my own feet: one foot was slightly bigger than the other (another example of our body’s natural asymmetries).

So, I started padding out one shoe to help it stay on. I even looked into selling mismatched pairs, but after talking to a lot of women, the feedback was clear: “Shoes aren’t the problem, bras are!”

It wasn’t just shoes that were bugging me – I had noticed for years that I have a difference in breast size too. Like most women, I’d make do by tightening the strap on one side or trying to hide the asymmetry with foam cup bras.

Our mission & vision at Evenly

I thought this was just something I had to live with, until I realised that the majority of women deal with breast asymmetry. But you’d never know it from the pictures we see in lingerie ads. We’re constantly fed images of perfectly symmetrical breasts, and it hit me: this was the problem. No one was addressing the reality of asymmetry, and it was time for that to change.

The Breast Is Yet to Come...

I started looking into bras – could I create one with mismatched cup sizes or adjustable volumes? That’s when I began working with a top bra designer in the UK, the same one who co-created the ground-breaking Ultimo gel bra. I attended the Interfilière lingerie trade show in Paris, learning everything I could about bra design, materials, and new technologies.

What I quickly learned is that lingerie design is no easy feat – a well-fitting bra is like an expert piece of engineering! After four years of research and development working with product designers, lingerie technicians, and bra fitting experts and funded by Innovate UK and the European Regional Development Fund, I designed and patented a bra specifically designed for breast asymmetry. I also won some awards and recognition along the way.

Worth the 'Weight'

While I was working on the perfect solution, I realised I couldn’t wait any longer to help women with the bras available right now. Wearing a symmetrical bra when you have asymmetrical breasts can cause real problems; poor posture, leaning to one side, neck and shoulder pain, and, of course, the lack of confidence that comes with wearing an ill-fitting bra.

I knew I had to find something that could balance out the weight difference between the breasts, allowing the bra to fit properly on the bigger side while still filling the cup and supporting the breast on the smaller side.

After lots of testing and research, the Evenly Bra Balancer™ was born. The name was very intentional - I didn’t call it a Breast Balancer - as it’s the bra that needs fixing, not any part of you.

The Uneven Titty Committee

I didn’t want to stop there. Through my research, I realised just how much of a taboo topic breast asymmetry is. I wanted to build more than just a product – I wanted to create a community. So, I founded The Uneven Titty Committee™ to bring us all together in support of one another.

It’s a place where you can find reassurance, share experiences, and connect with women who understand exactly what you’re going through. So, come join us on Facebook and meet the sisters you never knew you had!

I’m not done yet!

The technology I developed to create the patented asymmetry bra design is now being refined for manufacture as a new adjustable insert and I will be able to share an update on that in the near future. While I continue to refine and develop products and solutions based on all your incredible insights and feedback, there’s plenty more to come. Stay tuned, keep sending me your stories and feedback, and watch this space as we continue to innovate and break down the taboo surrounding breast asymmetry.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me – I can’t wait to share what’s next with you!
